Highlighting under the radar arts and culture in Birmingham, UK

Glee Club glee

The Dodos

After a short break, the Glee Club is back with a great programme of musicians to take us through until Christmas. Bands include Polar Bear, The Low Anthem, Cherbourg, Mumford & Sons and Johnny Flynn.

It all kicks off with The Dodos and Dan Michaelsonon Tuesday 1st September. Beauteous!

I’ll leave the summarising to the experts:

‘The Dodos superbly combine their exotic syncopations with a joyously taut indie-rock that suggests The Violent Femmes or Clinic. The lyrics are a mix of emotional candor and references to Roxy Music. The latter’s Brian Eno combined with David Byrne for the key Afro-influenced LP My Life in the Bush of Ghosts. Infectious, propulsive, unselfconscious.’  ~ Mojo, August 2008

Dan Michaelson recently supported Duke Special and The Leisure Society at the Glee. Dan Michaelson is the singer of Absentee. The Coastguards is his new offshoot…somewhere to go when he feels like a holiday. In September 2007 he recorded a number of songs that were deemed “not very Absentee” and this formed the backbone of the forthcoming album.

‘Impressive – comes on like Smog fronting the songs of Ed Harcourt” –  Uncut

Colour have written a nice piece on their blog about their recommendations for the next few months. Take a peek here.

Tickets can be bought on the Glee Club website.
