Highlighting under the radar arts and culture in Birmingham, UK

The Basement

The BasementA new bar has opened on New Street that evaded my notice until last Saturday. At 84b New Street, a few doors up from Habitat is an entrance to the small underground lair that is The Basement. Their aim is to mix ‘the laid back cool of New York City dive bars with the badass musical heritage of our brothers and sisters from across the pond’  and bring it to Brum! They even have an old jukebox. They are lacking a website at the moment but have a Facebook group here.

There are after work drinks specials 5pm – 8pm every day, and the bar is open until 3am on Fridays and Saturdays. DJs Mark & Layla create a great party atmosphere. Their club nights on Friday and Saturday offer: ‘A full on party night of soul, rock & roll, garage, blues and a little bit of hip hop to get you dancing’. For a taster look no further than here. Entry is free.

The music was really good. I am a big fan of 60s garage and rhythm & blues so it was right up my street. While I was there the club was invaded by a group of about 7 dancing Elvi. Their costumes were spectacularly appalling, manky, sweaty wigs and over-sized glasses. One was even wearing an Iron Maiden t-shirt under his flared all-in-one suit – Superb!
